David Friend, Vanity Fair’s editor of creative development, is the author of The Naughty Nineties: The Decade That Unleashed Sex, Lies, and the World Wide Web, out in paperback June 11.
Friend, an Emmy- and Peabody-winning film producer, served as Life magazine’s director of photography. He executive produced MLK/FBI (which was shortlisted for the 2020 Best Documentary Oscar), Lakota Nation vs. United States (released in 2023 after premiering at the TriBeCa Film Festival), the CBS documentary 9/11, and CNN’s The Flag (which was adapted from his book Watching the World Change: The Stories Behind the Images of 9/11). As a correspondent, Friend has covered conflicts in Afghanistan, Lebanon, and elsewhere. As a curator, he has mounted exhibitions on three continents. He has co-edited 13 Vanity Fair books and was the founding editor of Life.com and VanityFair.com. His poetry has appeared in The New Yorker.
