"No! I don’t want to get a life. Unless it is one full of play."
About Jon
Jon Burgerman is a New York-based British artist and children’s book author whose instantly recognizable works—pronounced eyes, fuzzy edges, bold colors, and comically distressed expressions—have traveled from gallery walls and public murals to children’s bookshelves.
In Burgerman’s words, within his art, “Soft, friendly shapes and bold colors interplay to create compositions that display an aesthetic joy but belie conflicting emotions beneath the surface. Vivid expressions of abstracted cartoon forms are utilized as key components of the compositions; the amorphous genderless masses are stacked, piled, squashed and delicately balanced, often moments away from potential collapse or complete evaporation.”
Burgerman’s works are held in the permanent collections of public collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the OÖ Landes-Kultur Museum in Linz, Austria, with his art being described as “bright and intuitive, focused on the visceral energy of play as a tenet of communication.” Exhibited internationally from Hong Kong and Taipei to Berlin and Edinburgh, his work includes collaborations with Disney, Sesame Street, Nike, Samsung, and Apple. In addition to his artwork, Burgerman is the author-illustrator of multiple picture books, including Splat!, How to Eat Pizza, Rhyme Crime, and the Everybody Series. He believes that through playful creative acts, art can be a catalyst for people to change their worlds.
Burgerman performed at House of SpeakEasy’s Seriously Entertaining show, “Pleasure for Pleasure,” in March 2026, and celebrated the radical act of making stuff just for the fun of it. He spoke about his recently published picture book Beginning, Middle, and End: Three characters—Beginning, Middle, and End—each believe they’re the most important part of a story; a squabble breaks out, End storms off, and the book itself threatens to fall apart.
