Tonight in New York City, residents could cool down with a summer dinner, attend a literary cabaret, or try out a story during an East Village open-mic night.

The Literary Cabaret: Falling for Perfection

At City Winery, House of SpeakEasy presented “Falling for Perfection,” a literary cabaret featuring writers, artists, and performers. Barnard College president Debora Spar, novelist Emma Straub, and The Daily Show head writer Elliott Kalan appeared alongside poet Jeffrey McDaniel, satirical songwriter Christopher Mason, playwright Adam Rapp, and The New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff. The event began at 8 p.m., with tickets priced from $25 to $45.

The Big Chill

Edible Brooklyn’s oven-free and stove-free summer dinner at Brooklyn Brewery offered a menu prepared by Theo Peck of Peck’s. Dishes included chilled borscht with pickled beets, chicken liver terrine, open-faced gravlax on Russian black bread, oil-poached leeks, a tomato and wax bean salad, and ice cream sandwiches, served with Brooklyn Brewery beer. Tickets were $40 for the event, which ran from 6 to 9 p.m.

Happy Hour Story Hour – Storytelling Open Mic

At UCB Theatre in the East Village, Julia Wiedeman hosted the weekly Happy Hour Story Hour. Audience members could put their names into a hat for a chance to tell a story or win a drink. The free open mic began at 6:30 p.m.

Night Train with Guest Host Seaton Smith

Comedian Seaton Smith filled in for Wyatt Cenac as host of Night Train at Littlefield. The evening’s stand-up lineup featured Billy Wayne Davis, Cameron Esposito, Drew Michael, Ryan Reiss, Kevin Iso, and Shonali Bhowmik. Tickets were $8, and the show started at 8 p.m.

Left Field

Becca Taubel’s show explored the comedy in feeling slightly out of step with the norm. The performance began at 7 p.m.; tickets were $10 online or $12 at the door.
